No travelers bucket list would be complete without a visit to the world famous Angkor Wat Cambodia temple. Its a profound and heavy experience.
Exploring Angkor feels a bit like stepping into The Jungle Book. These massive Hindu temple ruins are almost 1000 years old, and you can tell it.
Everywhere you look, the once fantastic buildings have been shaped by time and nature — with broken walls, caved in ceilings, and huge tree roots and jungle foliage slowly consuming the temples.
Once you arrive in Luwuk, there are taxi drivers waiting to take you to town and the drive is only about 20 minutes. We paid 50k Rupiah for the airport transfer.
From Luwuk town, you can take the public ferry from (Pelabuhan Rakyat) over to Leme Leme on Peleng island. It departs every day at 2 PM and the journey takes 2 hours, although it usually leaves an hour late (Indonesian rubber time).
Tickets can be bought on the spot for 54k Rupiah (~$3 USD) per person. Currently there’s no way to book this online, but the tickets don’t sell out.
The main way to get to Dhigurah is by public speedboat, and that’s how we went. There are daily departures in the morning and afternoon from Male airport and the city.
The speedboat journey to Dhigurah takes 2 hours and costs about $50 USD per person one way. Kids above 3 years old pay full price.
The boat ride usually isn’t too bumpy (depending on weather), and they have a toilet and plenty of room for storing luggage. The boats are new and the seats are comfortable. They also give you free bottled water.
The boats from Male to Dhigurah depart at 11 AM and 4:30 PM (Fridays 10 AM). The return boats from Dhigurah to Male depart at 6:30 AM and 1:30 PM (Fridays 1:45 PM). There’s a brief stop in Dhangethi island on the way to Dhigurah.
However, keep in mind there are multiple speedboat companies operating this route and the timetable seems to change occasionally, so I’d double check the timetable with your hotel in Dhigurah before you go.
It’s easy to get to Khao Sok independently if you don’t want to use a tour package.
From Phuket, you can get to Khlong Sok village by public bus, shared minivan, or private taxi.
The bus has 5 departures per day, and it’s a 4 hour ride. The minivan has up to 8 departures per day, and the ride takes anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on where you start in Phuket. A taxi ride will take 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
